In a historic moment for Indian cinema, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) will become the first-ever Indian film to be immortalized with a statue in London’s iconic Leicester Square. The announcement was made by the Heart of London Business Alliance, marking the start of DDLJ’s 30-year anniversary celebrations.

A Landmark Tribute to Bollywood
Yash Raj Films’ blockbuster hit, directed by Aditya Chopra and starring Bollywood legends Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, will be featured in the world-famous ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail. This makes DDLJ the first Indian film—and the first Bollywood stars—to be recognized among international cinema greats in this prominent London location.
The bronze statue will depict Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in one of their most iconic poses from the film. Set to be unveiled in Spring 2025, the statue will be placed along the eastern terrace of Leicester Square, outside the Odeon cinema. The location holds special significance, as Leicester Square itself appears in the film during a key moment when Raj and Simran unknowingly cross paths.
Celebrating a Global Legacy
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is widely regarded as one of the most beloved Hindi films of all time. It follows the love story of Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians whose European adventure leads to a journey of self-discovery, family values, and love. Over the past three decades, the film has become a pop culture phenomenon and a symbol of romance for generations of audiences around the world.
The decision to honor DDLJ with a statue also celebrates its deep connection with the British South Asian community, which numbers over five million. The film’s influence even reached the highest levels of diplomacy—former U.S. President Barack Obama famously referenced it during his official visit to India.
Joining Global Cinema Icons
The DDLJ statue will take its place alongside a distinguished group of movie legends featured in Leicester Square’s ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail, including:
- Harry Potter
- Laurel & Hardy
- Mary Poppins
- Gene Kelly (Singin’ in the Rain)
- Mr. Bean
- Paddington Bear
- Bugs Bunny
- Batman and Wonder Woman
